Chronological Trip Through The Gospels – 31

Day 31

Evangelists & their focus

Jesus eases John’s doubt

Matthew 11:1-19Luke 7:11-17

  • The two accounts are nearly identical. Luke adds in the observation of the reaction from the crowd surrounding Jesus.
  • JB (John the Baptist) had a lot of time to think during his prison time and he, understandably, starts questioning his life choices. He sends some followers to ask Jesus to confirm that He is the Christ.
  • Jesus answers with understanding and compassion. Then he turns to his followers, proclaiming JB to be the greatest who ever lived. What wonderful encouragement that Jesus did not think less of ‘the greatest’ because of his request for confirmation. Because of his doubt. What marvellous acceptance and endorsement of JB to encourage him and reward him.
  • Blessed is the one that is not offended by me. How do you understand that comment?
  • Even the least person in the Kingdom of heaven, is greater than he is. What incredible hope for John to know that his ministry ushered in the Kingdom of heaven.
  • From the time {JB} began preaching until now, the Kingdom of heaven has suffered from violence and violent people are attacking it. Many are plotting and scheming against Jesus’ ministry and his followers, trying to prevent his Kingdom from spreading.
  • Jesus points to scripture Mal 3:1 to help his people realize during what time they are living.  Mal 4:5 to help them realize just who John is and thereby, who he (Jesus) must be.
  • Perhaps it may have jarred some hearts to realize that they were in a constant state of criticism and dissatisfaction. John was so strange in his dress and habits that he was sometimes considered demon-possessed. Jesus friends/habits in turn prompted judgements of drunkenness, gluttony (he didn’t fast) and foolishness. Gods people could apparently not be satisfied unless everyone conformed. That situation actually reminds me of our current time.
  • People can call you foolish until their tongues go fuzzy. The wisdom by which you live will be revealed to them through the results in and after your life.
